avoidance or withdrawal from social situations,
social rejection and loneliness.
Are we not also prone to deafness to our
spiritual world, to the sounds and tones God
wishes to impart to us? Do we no longer hear
His voice because of the barrier of sound we
have allowed the world to put around us? No
doubt one of the effects of sin, which in essence
is a turning away from what God calls us to be-
come, is that it builds up like ear wax in our
lives. The more it builds up, the more impene-
trable the barrier becomes.
Yet, we can have our spiritual hearing re-
stored. Three excerpts from a song by James
Drummond Burns in the Salvation Army Song
Book (#839) explain how. They refer to a boy
named Samuel who long ago was assigned to
work at a temple in service to God. The boy was
awakened at night by a voice, and by listening
intently and responding, he heard God Almighty
speak to him.
O give me Samuel's ear,
The open ear, O Lord,
Alive and quick to hear
Each whisper of Thy word;
Like him to answer at Thy call
And to obey Thee first of all.
O give me Samuel's heart
A lowly heart, that waits ...
By day and night, a heart that still
Moves at the breathing of Thy will.
O give me Samuel's mind,
A lowly heart, that waits
Where in thy house thou art,
Or watches at thy gates
By day and night, a heart that still
Moves at the breathing of Thy will.
If we heed these words, never again will we be
deaf and isolated in this world. We can always
hear the voice of the Master as He talks with
us in every moment of our lives.

earing loss can be caused by a
wide range of things--the rum-
bling of jack hammers or heavy
machinery at work, motorcycles,
lawnmowers, loud music, old
age, ear wax, ear infections, fluid, sinus infec-
tions, colds and flu.
A survey by the Better Hearing Institute
finds that more than 34 million Americans, about
11% of the population, have experienced hearing
loss. Numerous studies have linked untreated
hearing loss to a wide range of physical and emo-
tional conditions, including irritability, nega-
tivism, anger, fatigue, tension, stress, depression,
