Salvation
Admit your need
"For all have sinned and fall
short of the glory of God"
(Romans 3:23)
Believe in Christ
"Believe in the Lord Jesus,
and you will be saved"
(Acts 16:31)
Commit yourself to Christ
"Yet to all who received Him... He gave
the right to become children of God"
(John 1:12)
Being truly sorry for your sins, and through the
power of Christ forsaking them, go for ward to live
for Christ. He will give forgiveness, power, victory,
purpose, the Holy Spirit and life eternal.
Major Allen Satterlee is
Editor in Chief and
National Literary Secretary
for The Salvation Army
in the USA.
Th e S a l va t i o n A r my first
arrived in Jamaica in 1887, 50
years after the abolition of slavery
in the Caribbean. Ruled by a colo-
nial white elite, the country was
struggling economically and class
and racial lines were sharply
drawn. Throughout the region Sal-
vationists met with fierce persecu-
tion from both police and the
general public.
Major Allen Satterlee deftly unveils
the history of the Army in the
Caribbean through firstperson ac-
counts, sensitive portrayals of Sal-
vationists at work and eight pages
of historical photos. You will follow
the organization through the tu-
mult of the Great Depression,
global epidemics, the First and
Second World Wars and the rise
and fall of communism.
In a region continually overrun by
hurricanes and social upheaval,
Salvationists have rescued disaster
victims and orphans, taught the
blind to read, counseled troubled
youth, provided food, shelter and
medical care, and more.
The history of the Caribbean illus-
trates that no situation can ever be
daunting enough to quash the al-
truism and evangelistic zeal of the
Army. Reducing suffering through
the love of Christ is, after all, the
goal of the Army and the heart of
the gospel.
