The War Cry | FEBRUARY 2016
I

believe that God raised up The Salvation Army. We were
called to be workers in God's vineyard.
Matthew 25:35-40 records the words of Jesus: "For I was
hungry, and you fed Me. I was thirsty, and you gave Me a
drink. I was a stranger, and you invited Me into your home. I
was naked, and you gave Me clothing. I was sick, and you
cared for Me. I was in prison, and you visited Me.
"Then these righteous ones will reply, `Lord, when did we
ever see You hungry and feed You? Or thirsty and give You something to
drink? Or a stranger and show You hospitality? Or naked and give You
clothing? When did we ever see You sick or in prison and visit You?'
"And the King will say, `I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least
of these My brothers and sisters, you were doing it to Me!'"
The Salvation Army believes that when we serve the poor, the hungry and
the homeless, we serve Jesus.
In 1865, William Booth walked among the poor of London's East End, feeling
their misery and sensing their hopelessness. He announced to his wife, "I've
found my destiny." That statement over 150 years ago was the genesis of The
Salvation Army.
Booth developed what became known as the Cab Horse Charter. "When in
the streets of London a cab horse, weary or careless or stupid, trips and falls
and has stretched out in the midst of the traffi c, there is no question of
debating how he came to stumble before we try to get him on his legs again...
When he is down he is helped up, and while he lives he has food, shelter and
work." He said this goal was unattainable for 10 percent of the population of
London in 1890.
Our mission continues to be preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ and
meeting human need in His name without discrimination.

L
ove in action has been the natural outcome of new life in
Christ since the beginning of Christianity. From the
moment of His birth, through His teaching and healing
ministry, to His sacrifi cial death on Calvary and His glorious
resurrection, Jesus was the personifi cation of love in action.
His example and the dynamic change that comes with new
life in Christ make authentic Christianity impossible without
that love in action.
It was that love in action that moved the church to not only witness but to
suffer, sacrifi ce and lose everything to spread the good news of salvation; to
pioneer hospitals for the sick; lead the fi ght for female education and
education of the poor; pioneer humane treatment of the mentally ill; advocate
for the abolition of slavery.
The existence of The Salvation Army itself depends on love in action. Why
does the Army proclaim new life in Christ and the glorious witness of a holy
life? Why does it open in more countries and cities to provide care? Why would
it continue to rush forward when towns and countries are destroyed, move
among the misery of refugee camps, stand by the side of those abandoned in
the hour of death because of their disease or status? It is God's love in action.
We who are His servants are allowed the privilege of God's love fl owing
through us to others so we can act on His behalf.
What is that old slogan? Heart to God, hand to man.
