The War Cry | FEBRUARY 2016
CHRIST AND CULTURE
A
new movie that tells the story of the crucifixion,
burial and resurrection of Jesus through the eyes of
a Roman officer premieres in the United States and
Canada on February 19.
Risen stars Joseph Fiennes as a Roman tribune named
Clauvius, charged by Pontius Pilate to disprove and intercept
rumors that Christ lives again after having been put to death
and buried.
Clavius and his aide, Lucius, are ordered to solve the
mystery of what happened to Jesus in the weeks following
the crucifixion. Clavius is determined to locate the corpse
to avoid talk of a risen messiah, and to prevent an uprising
in Jerusalem.
As they proceed, Clavius and Lucius slowly unravel
answers they did not anticipate.
Eight years in the making, the film tells the story of the
first Easter as understood by a nonbeliever and depicts the
tension between doubt and faith, truth and falsehood and
God's will and man's will. The movie's accurate depictions of
Jesus' homeland under Roman rule and why the beginnings
of Christianity were so startling make this film a detective
story that highlights historical realities and the possibility of
personal transformation .
Sony Pictures Entertainment will distribute Risen through
its TriStar and Affirm Divisions--the same companies that
have enjoyed boxoffice success for the emerging faith
based market (Heaven Is For Real, War Room).
Two more faithbased films are scheduled to debut in 2016.
The Young Messiah out in March, imagines a 7yearold Jesus
departing Egypt for Nazareth. A reremake of Ben Hur (earlier
versions premiered in 1925 and 1959) will star Jack Huston
and Morgan Freeman and will come out in August.

S
cience and research now show a wide range
of harm caused by pornography, including
direct links to increased demand for sex
trafficking, child sexual exploitation and vi-
olence against women. Pornography affects the developing
brains and shapes the sexual templates of children. It also
contributes to the rise in sexual dysfunction now experienced
by many young men, and can be tied to the normalization of
dangerous sexual and social behaviors." So reads the execu-
tive summary presented at the symposium on Pornography:
A Public Health Crisis held last July in Washington, D.C.,
sponsored by the National Center on Sexual Exploitation.
According to Enough is Enough (EIE), a nonprofit with
a mission to make the Internet safer for children and fami-
lies, online grooming is a process in which a predator uses
seemingly casual or innocent information to gain a child's
trust. It may start with something as simple as a popular
music group, sports team or clothing trend.
Among EIE's findings as highlighted in its Internet
Safety 101 program:
1 in 7
kids received a sexual solicitation online.
44%
of sexual solicitors were under the age of 18.
The majority of victims of Internet-initiated sex crimes were
between
13 and 15
years old;
75%
of victims of Internet
initiated crimes were girls.
82%
of online sex crimes against minors resulted from the
offender using the victim's social networking sites to gain
information about the victim.
7 out of 10
youth have accidentally come across
pornography online.
One million children
were harassed, threatened or
subjected to other forms of cyber-bullying on Facebook
during the past year.
EIE encourages parents to be the first line of defense
in maintaining the safety of their children by paying
attention to what their kids are doing online, asking them
nonthreatening questions about experiences online and
avoiding overreacting to the problem in general and what
children report in particular.
EIE's award-winning Internet Safety Program educates,
equips and empowers parents, educators and caring adults
to protect children from online pornography, sexual preda-
tors, cyberbullies, cyber security risks and dangers related to
social networking, online gaming and mobile devices. Learn
