Students Unite in Prayer

More than three million students from at least 20
countries gathered on school grounds this fall for
"See You at the Pole 2012," the 22nd annual
Global Day of Student Prayer. This event is held
on the fourth Wednesday of September. Students
voluntarily meet at their campus flagpoles before
school to pray for their friends, families, teachers,
school and nation. This year's theme was
"Awaken," taken from the prayer in Ephesians
3:14-21: "For this reason I kneel before the Father,
from whom every family in heaven and on earth
derives its name. I pray that out of His glorious
riches He may strengthen you with power through
His Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may
dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray
that you, being rooted and established in love,
may have power, together with all the Lord's holy
people, to grasp how wide and long and high and
deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love
that surpasses knowledge--that you may be filled
to the measure of all the fullness of God."
Seventy-five percent of
the world's population
lives under high or very
high restrictions on their
religious beliefs or prac-
tices, according to a new
study by the Pew Forum
on Religion & Public Life. Pew researchers cited an
increasing lack of tolerance in matters of faith
throughout the world. Limits set by government and
society grew especially more severe in the Middle East,
North Africa, Europe and sub-Sarahan Africa. Reli-
gious restraints were elevated not only in countries
with little freedom, such as Nigeria and Indonesia,
but also in countries with much greater liberty, such
as Switzerland and the U.S. The share of countries
with high or very high restrictions on religious beliefs
and practices rose from 31% in the year ending in
mid-2009 to 37% in the year ending in mid-2010. Be-
cause some of the most restrictive countries account
for a large percentage of the world's population of
seven billion people, the number of those living under
high restrictions on religion rose five percent compared
to the previous year.
