The War Cry | CHRISTMAS 2014
One way that
support has been dem-
onstrated over the past
few years is through the
Rock the Red Kettle
event, held annually in
the Los Angeles area.
Over 4,000 people--
mostly teenagers--
swamped the Universal
City Walk last Decem-
ber to see headliner Austin
Mahone, accompanied by
other popular acts including
Emblem 3, Coco Jones and
Bean. As a special
treat Kelly Rowland,
of Destiny's Child
fame, did an onstage interview.
The fans were given quite a show.
The stage and the entire area were
"lit up like a Christmas tree." In fact,
there was a Christmas tree that was
at least two stories high twinkling
with shifting lights, and the stage it-
self featured lit up Christmas decora-
tions. The whole scene was throbbing
with sound and light. And the perfor-
mances by
the musi-
cians were
electrify-
ing. Excited
fans sang along
as they raised
their cell phones
to video the show.
So, what does a
great con-
cert with
young pop stars have to do
with The Salvation Army?
The purpose of Rock the
Red Kettle is to introduce
a new generation to the
work of the Army.
It's a way to attract
donors, volunteers
and maybe even potential soldiers.
The Salvation Army looks to the
younger generation to carry its great
mission forward. The great thing is
that the Army and young people are
a perfect match. Today's young peo-
ple are known for their passion for
justice. This generation cares about
the world and the people in it. When
young people find out who Salva-
tionists really are, they
learn that we are meet-
ing the kinds of needs
they care about. We are
there for natural di-
sasters. We tutor kids.
Shelter the home-
less. Feed the hun-
gry. Rehabilitate addicts.
And our doors are open,
ready to welcome young
people who want to join with us.
Having young
stars hop on stage
and promote the Army lets a whole
new generation know who we are and
how they can help. Videos were shown
of Austin Mahone and others volun-
teering at The Salvation Army. The
singers talked about the Army dur-
ing their performances, and pumped
up the Army on twitter and facebook.
A throng of teenagers, many who
stood in front of the stage for hours
on end to ensure their spot, got more
than just a thrilling show. They also
got something to think about. And
quite possibly The Salvation Army
acquired a few new fans of its own!
