The War Cry | CHRISTMAS 2014
Another quiet night, it seemed
On the rocky Judean hill
The brotherhood of herdsmen sat
`Round the fire, avoiding the chill.
When suddenly, this ho-hum night
Was transformed to something glorious!
An angel spoke then thousands more!
With heavenly sounds uproarious!
"Fear not!" the angel said--too late
(Already the shepherds quavered)
"I bring good news, this night is born
The Son of God your Savior!"
Ah, see them running through the streets
Unencumbered by doubt or suspicion
Energized by the heaven--sent news
Seekers, on a mission!
The Spirit led in miraculous ways
To the birthplace and the strangers
And sure enough, as the angel said
They found the Babe, in a manger.
A cattle feeding trough, no less!
Such a humble crib for the Holy!
But in reverent hush, the herdsmen knelt
Feeling at home with the lowly.

Then rising from their bended knees
They couldn't wait to shout it!
Those shepherds--turned evangelists
Told all they met about it.
Laughing and leaping like boys out of school
They chatted with wild animation.
The Liberator had come to town.
They were filled with jubilation!
Nothing would be the same again
Everything rearranged
(Oh, the same simple job--the same smelly sheep)
But their lives were forever changed.
And isn't it just like His great love
That the God of Abraham
Would choose the shepherds fi rst of all
To behold His Son... the LAMB!
