On any given day,
there are between 200 and 300 people living
on the streets in Charlottesville, Virginia and the surrounding areas.
Rebeckah Armistead used to be one of them, but now she's pushing
for more services to help the homeless in the area.
"To be homeless, it's the fear of the unknown," said Armistead.
"Not knowing where you're going to put your head the next day. If you
don't have family support, then you're on your own."
Armistead turned to The Salvation Army to help get back
on her feet after spending 20 years battling homelessness. The
Salvation Army emergency shelter is the only
overnight shelter open year-round in central
Virginia.
Armistead took her issues to Capitol
Hill this summer to meet with Virginia
Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner,
as part of the National Conference on
Ending Homelessness.
"I want them to get more
involved, I want them to take
notice," said Armistead. She also
invited Representative Robert Hurt
to tour the shelters. "I really think
congressmen, our representatives,
need to see first hand what it's like."

Emergency Response in China
Following 6.6 Earthquake
An Assessment Team
from The Salvation Army's
Hong Kong and Macau
Command rushed to Dingxi
City in the Gansu Province
of China following a 6.6
earthquake in July that left
89 people dead, caused
significant damage to
infrastructure and left about
1,500 people homeless. The
team met with local officials
and were escorted directly
to one of the worst-affected
areas--the Ma Jia Ko village
of Mai Chun township. The
immediate response included
a comprehensive needs
assessment for the survivors
and a visit to patients in
a local hospital who were
injured in the quake. The
team, led by Envoy Simon
Wong and Major Tony Ma,
distributed instant noodles
and preserved vegetables
to community members
most seriously affected
by the destruction and
offered pastoral support
to families who had lost
loved ones. Returning
to Hong Kong, the team
submitted a proposal to
the government for funding
to assist the survivors in the
next phase of recovery.
