Commissioner Barry C.
Swanson, Chief of the Staff,
and Commissioner Sue
Swanson, World President of
Women's Ministries, brought
an international aspect to
national celebrations this
spring marking the Salvation
Army's 125 years of involve-
ment in Italy. The "125th
Congress," held in Rome by
the Army's Italy and Greece
Command, included open-
air ministry in the Vatican.
Useful contacts were
made with politicians, busi-
ness people and other influ-
ential figures during a press
conference and public dinner
prior to the congress. Com-
missioner Swanson present-
ed an overview of the Army's
international mission and the
Italy and Greece Command
informed the gathering
about the Army's work in
Italy. The Chief of the Staff
was also interviewed by the
local church press.
The visiting France and
Belgium Territorial Band
played and prayed in St. Pe-
ter's Square for an attentive
crowd, including Monsignor
Brian Farrell from the Pontif-
ical Council for Promoting
Christian Unity.
Workshops focused on
holiness today, The Salvation
Army's identity and heritage,
its ministry in red-light dis-
tricts, efforts to combat hu-
man trafficking and planting
new corps.
The visiting band also
held an open-air meeting in
the central Piazza San Silve-
stro, again gathering an ap-
preciative crowd.
Commissioner Sue Swan-
son led a women's rally at
which 20 people responded
to an altar call. In the
evening the France and Bel-
gium Territorial Band pre-
sented a concert at the
Waldensian Church in Piazza
Cavour, delighting the audi-
ence with technique and
imaginative presentation.
Bible messages by the
Chief of the Staff and Com-
missioner Sue Swanson cul-
minated the congress on
Sunday, along with contribu-
tions from the visiting band,
cadets, worship groups and
young people from the Italy
and Greece Command.
