never continued in Christ. Being in the Word is
God's way of growing our capacity to be filled
more with Him. He uses His Word to keep our
hearts growing in Christlikeness and holiness.
The more we're in the Word and in a dynamic in-
teractive relationship with the Lord, the more He
can grow our heart to be
filled even more with
Him. And as we become
more and more filled
with Him we can speak
out of and inspired by
the Word.

How do most unbelievers view the Bible?
Raymond:
A lot of unbelievers view the Bible as a
kind of quaint text that might be filled with some
pithy proverbs and some huge stories. They don't
recognize the Bible as a living document; rather
they see it as a historical document that lines up
with other religions' scriptures.
We get students who come out of good Christian
homes and churches who may have picked up a
verse here or story there. But they're largely com-
ing into Christian universities, and so many of the
students are biblically illiterate. Their home has
not fostered the habit of being in the Word.

What's your favorite Bible verse?
Raymond:
The Lord gives me a favorite verse or
passage every year. There are many favorites.
This year it's Colossians 2:6,7: "So just as you re-
ceive Jesus Christ as Lord, continue to live your
lives in Him, rooted and built up in Him,
strengthened in the faith you were taught, and
overflowing with thankfulness." I love the em-
phasis on continue, rooted, and built up.
Another verse I love is Psalm 100: "I will come
into His gates with thanksgiving, I will enter His
courts with praise." This Psalm is a song of as-
cent originally sung by a person on a journey, a
pilgrimage, to Jerusalem, the holy city for an-
cient Israel, where God instructed His people to
build His temple. They sang this Psalm as they
approached the temple and ascended its steps.
The temple becomes a metaphor for creating inti-
macy with God. In the same way, I will respond
to God's grace with thanksgiving and my thanks-
giving will spill over into praise. I will move
through gates and courts in thanksgiving and
praise, thanking God for what He has done,
praising Him for who He is. And that act of
thanksgiving and praise really moves me into a
deeper, intimate relationship with God.
