The Red Kettle:
Ministry at The Point of Need
F
rom its humble beginnings as a program started
by a Salvation Army captain in San Francisco in 1891,
the Red Kettle Campaign has grown into one of the most
recognizable and important charitable campaigns in the
United States. Last year it raised over $148.7 million to help
provide toys for kids, coats for the homeless, food for the hungry
and social service programs year�round. This year more than
25,000 Salvation Army volunteers throughout the country will
ring bells as Americans express their generosity by donating
their nickels, dimes, quarters, dollars (and the occasional
diamond ring or gold coins) to support families and individuals in
the communities where donations are received.
Proceeds from the Red Kettle Campaign--now in its 123rd
year--support services to about 30 million individuals in need.
Through the Salvation Army Online Red Kettle
(onlineredkettle.org) donors were able to raise more than $2.1
million last year with the
help of family, friends and
colleagues, and the Army
received an unprecedented
$3.9 million in online donations
by year's end.
The campaign kicks off with a live performance
during halftime of the Dallas Cowboys' traditional Thanksgiving
day football game at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
"From our celebrity performers, our gracious volunteer
bell ringers to our corporate sponsors and the American
people," notes National Commander Commissioner David
Jeffrey, "The Salvation Army can once again see firsthand
the compassion that exists in our land and the changes
such goodwill can make in the lives of individuals, families
and communities."
