The Sinking of
The MVGeorgic
D
uring World War II, a future Gen-
eral of The Salvation Army
experienced a remarkable example
of God's providential care.
Soon after Canada became embroiled in a world
war with Nazi Germany, The Salvation Army offered
selected offi cers to serve
as chaplains to Canada's
armed forces. Adjutant Clar-
ence Wiseman was commis-
sioned as a military chap-
lain in late 1939.
His pastoral charge was
to the men of the Second
Battalion, Royal Canadian
Engineers. The battalion
boarded the MV Georgic
and crossed the Atlantic,
where they awaited further orders.
"Mail came through very slowly during that
period," General Wiseman later wrote in his autobi-
ography, A Burning In My Bones, "so [my wife] Janet
received no word of my safe arrival. Neither had
any word reached Salvation Army [territorial] head-
quarters in Toronto."
During those dreadful weeks of silence, Mrs. Wise-
man listened to short-wave radio and happened
to pick up a broadcast from Germany spoken in
English. The dry, mocking voice claimed that several
Canadian ships had been sunk while trying to reach
beleaguered Britain. The German-accented voice
listed the names of the alleged sunken ships--among
them, the Georgic .
After nearly a month
of silent agony, Clarence's
fi rst letter from Britain fi nally
arrived. She tore open the
letter with trembling fi ngers.
He was safe! The report
about the Georgic had been
German propaganda.
Psalm 91:11 reassures
us, "For He will order His
angels to protect you
wherever you go."
Simply place your faith in God's
providential care.
Footnote:
The MV
Georgic was the last ship built
and owned by the White Star Line, the luxury com-
mercial fl eet that included the infamous HMS
Titanic.
The MV
Georgic was indeed sunk several months
after the incident described in this article.

Unlikely home remedies used for generations appear
in movies like My Big, Fat Greek Wedding, in which the
characters claim that a few spritzes of Windex can cure
bee stings, clear up acne, remove stains and more.
Though these dubious home remedies can seem comi-
cal, when you're really sick and suffering you're in no
mood to laugh. Thankfully, God has provided us with
one panpharmacon that truly works.
Readers and friends, believe me when I say that
prayer is a medicine that truly cures all. There is no
ailment God cannot heal. His Word is far more powerful
and applicable than we could ever comprehend.
I believe our healing is as important to God as is His
love, mercy and grace is to us believers. In my experi-
ence with ailments of the soul, God's power points out
the malady, diagnoses it, then heals it.
Remember what the Psalmist said of God, "He sent
out His word and healed them, snatching them from the
door of death" (Psalm 107:20).
So, if you are in need of Christ's healing touch,
let me assure you through His Word, that through
faith, your healing has already begun!
