The War Cry | NOVEMBER 2015
A
s settlers headed west in the nineteenth century
to pursue Manifest Destiny and claim stakes in
America's expanding territory, St. Louis, Missouri,
became the crossroads of American trade and migration.
Between 1860 and 1900, the city's population quadru-
pled. Industries grew and burgeoning economic condi-
tions rewarded some while leaving many of St. Louis'
most vulnerable citizens--children, unwed mothers, and
Civil War veterans--without shelter, food or support.
During this time The Salvation
Army's presence grew in St. Louis,
its message of hope, healing and
salvation touching the lives of hun-
dreds of thousands of individuals.
With the outbreak of World War
I, the Army brought its message
and mission as Salvationists served
soldiers in the trenches in France.
Salvation Army officers brought
comfort and spiritual support, as
well as hot coffee and doughnuts,
to exhausted troops.
Salvationists have continued
such service to men and women of
the Armed Forces through every
armed conflict this nation has seen
since 1917. This longstanding tradi-
tion gained new ground when in
2012 The Salvation Army chose
Midtown St. Louis as the site for
a Veterans' Residence.
The Veterans Residence is a cor-
nerstone project within the Army's
planned $60-million redevelopment
of Midtown St. Louis. Its completion
